About Walmart:

Walmart was a small discount store that was opened with an idea of selling more for less, today it has grown over 11,200 branches across 27 countries. From Walmart grocery to entertainment, the everyday low price is guaranteed to bring out the best in one-stop shopping.

History:

The existence of Walmart was brought to life when Sam Walton (Businessmen and former J.C. Penney employee) bought a branch of Ben Franklin stores from the Butler Brothers. Sam’s main aim was to sell a high volume of products at a low-profit-margin. This portrayed Sam’s reputation as a savior for the customers. Although Sam’s store faced a lot of setbacks due to high lease price and branch purchase, he fought hard and was successful to find lower-cost suppliers. Sales started to hit leaderboard charts as the store experienced a 45% increase in the first year which was around $150,000 in revenue. Within the fifth year, the store was generating around $250,000 in revenue. After the lease for location expired, Sam opened a new store at 105 N, Main Street Bentonville which was named “Walton’s Five and Dime”. On July 2, 1962, Walton opened the first discount store at Walnut Street in Rogers, Arkansas. Today, this place is occupied by a hardware store and an antique mall while the discount store is shifted to west at 2110 Walnut Street. Sam opened around 24 stores across Arkansas within its five years reaching a $12.6 million in sales. In 1968, the first Walmart store outside Arkansas opened in Sikeston, Missouri, Claremore, and Oklahoma.

On October 31, 1969, Sam Walton’s stores were incorporated as Wal-Mart, Inc and the name was changed to Wal-Mart Stores, Inc in 1970. In the same year, Walmart opened its first distribution center and home office in Bentonville, Arkansas. By now Walmart had around 38 stores with 1500 employees and a sale revenue of $44.2 million. Walmart became the publicly held company on October 1, 1970, and got listed on New York Stock Exchange with a $47 per share by May 1971. Walmart entered Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas in 1973, 1974 and 1975 respectively. As per 1975, the store has around 125 branches, 7500 employees and a total sales revenue of $340.3 million. The 1980s was a successful reign of Walmart as it continued to grow rapidly and by 1987 there were 1198 branches, $15.9 billion in sales and around 200,000 employees. In the same year, Walmart completed the satellite network that linked all the operating units with the home office in Bentonville via two-way voice data transmission and one-way video communication. At this time, Walmart’s satellite network was the biggest of all that allowed corporate office to track inventory, sales and instant communication with stores. Walton left the CEO position and was replaced by David Glass in 1988. In the late 1990s, Walmart surpassed the sales of Toys “R” US in toy sales and became one of the largest retailers in the United States.

As per the report generated on May 31, 2019, Walmart international stops comprised of 6360 stores and 800000 workers in 26 countries outside of the United States.
